Paper wasps

Problem
Single-layered paper nests are suspended from eaves, ceilings, or branches. These nests are composed of exposed, open cells, and have a honeycomb appearance. They are often umbrella shaped. Black or brown wasps with yellow or red stripes may be seen hovering around or crawling on the nests.

Analysis
(Polistes species)
Paper wasps, also known as umbrella wasps, usually live in small colonies consisting of 20 to 30 wasps. They build paper nests in which they raise their young. Paper wasps feed on insects, nectar, and pollen. They are not as aggressive and protective of their nests as are yellowjackets. (For more information about yellowjackets, see Yellowjackets.) However, they will sting if threatened, causing swelling, itching, and more generalized symptoms in sensitive individuals.

Solution
To remove paper wasps from the vicinity, you must eliminate their nests. Spray the nests at dusk or during the night with ORTHO Hornet & Wasp Killer or ORTHO Outdoor Insect Fogger. Spray the nest from a distance of 8 feet. Stop spraying when wasps begin to emerge; leave the nest area quickly by walking, not running away. Repeat the spraying every evening until the insects fail to emerge. Remove the nest and dispose of it. If you are stung, apply a cold compress or ice pack to the swollen area. If a severe reaction develops, call your doctor.
